EUROPE’S ROUTE 66 & THE SPANISH HEARTLANDS

Join us for an unforgettable 12-day driving adventure that combines the ultimate bucket-list road—Portugal’s legendary N2—with the historic locations of the Spanish heartlands. Often dubbed “Europe’s Route 66”, the route winds from the mountainous north of Portugal down to the sun-drenched Algarve. We’ve carefully curated this journey to connect the finest, most rhythmic driving sections with restful days at some of the Iberian Peninsula’s most iconic hotels.

Balkans – pre tour & day 1
Day 1
PRE-TOUR
THE MEETING POINT
4th May

Our adventure begins in Portsmouth, where we gather at a local hotel near the ferry terminal. This pre-tour meet-up provides the ideal opportunity to introduce ourselves, meet our fellow travellers, and receive a welcome and briefing on the journey ahead. After distributing the route handbooks and two-way radios, we will make the short drive to the port. Together, we board the overnight ferry to Spain, ready to start our Iberian road trip.

Day 1
DAY 1
ARRIVAL & THE RUN SOUTH
6th May
~240 miles

We arrive in northern Spain off the morning ferry, eager for our Iberian adventure to officially begin. Leaving the port behind, we head southwest on sweeping, lightly trafficked Spanish highways. Our route crosses the Portuguese border, bringing us into the lush, green landscapes of northern Portugal. We conclude this relaxed introductory drive by arriving at a historic palace hotel nestled in the pine forests, where we will settle in for a two-night stay.

Balkans – day 2 & 3
Day 1
DAY 2
REST DAY
7th May
~250 miles

Our second day is entirely free choice. You can leave the keys securely in our rooms to indulge in the thermal spa and golf course, or perhaps take a short hop to explore historic Chaves or a longer scenic drive to Braga. For those craving more time on the road, we can tackle one of Portugal’s highly regarded mountain roads for a traditional lunch in Bragança. The day is ours to unwind or explore at our own pace.

Day 1
DAY 3
THE N2 BEGINS
8th May
~110 miles

Following an obligatory group photo at the famous start marker, our journey down Portugal’s historic central route truly begins. The road sweeps us directly down into the terraced vineyards of the northern river valleys. The afternoon shifts gear with an alpine-style climb over the central mountain ranges, rewarding us all with expansive elevated views. Our day finishes at a boutique hotel located deep in the heart of the Portuguese wine country.

Portugal & Spain – day 4 – 5
Day 1
DAY 4
RIVERS, MOUNTAINS & PLAINS
9th May
~120 miles

The morning drive beautifully hugs the local riverbanks before carving through tight, twisty mountain forests. As we push further south, the landscape transforms right before our eyes. The challenging mountain switchbacks are replaced by the vast, open and sun-baked plains of the famous Alentejo region. We finish this incredibly varied day of driving by parking up and relaxing at a tranquil lakeside retreat as the sun goes down.

Day 1
DAY 5
ARRIVE IN THE ALGARVE
10th May
~155 miles

A steady morning cruise past rolling hills of cork oaks leads us to a rhythmic section of twisty tarmac that serves as a focal point of the southern route. We enjoy the engaging curves and changing landscapes as we drop toward the coast. After pausing for a group photo at the official southern finish line, we head straight to our 5-star coastal resort, where we will check in for a three-night stay.

~300 miles, 5-6 hours driving time
Portugal & Spain – day 6 – 8
Day 1
DAY 6 & 7
COASTAL REST & MORNING LOOPS
11th & 12th May
~60 miles (optional)

Our time on the coast is dedicated to complete relaxation and setting our own pace. We can spend these days unwinding by the pool, walking along the nearby beaches, or enjoying the local dining options. For those who want to keep the engines running, we offer an optional morning driving loop up to the highest elevation in the region, providing engaging mountain roads and coastal views before returning for a free afternoon.

Day 1
DAY 8
THE SPANISH TRANSITION
13th May
~235 miles

Leaving the coastal resorts behind, we cross the border back into the sweeping landscapes of southern Spain. Seeking out the best tarmac, our route detours onto a smooth forest road famous for producing the country’s finest cured meats—making it the ultimate authentic lunch stop. A final highway cruise through the open countryside brings us to our hotel for the night.

Portugal & Spain – Day 9 – 10
Day 1
DAY 9
THE SPANISH HEARTLANDS
14th May
~175 miles

Today offers a choice of pace to suit our mood. We can take a direct highway cruise across the open Spanish plains, or opt for a twisting detour that navigates through steep mountain hairpins. Whichever route we choose, both options converge beautifully in the afternoon at a magnificent hotel near Salamanca, where we will check in for an indulgent two-night stay.

Day 1
DAY 10
SALAMANCA REST DAY
15th May
~260 miles

Our mid-trip rest day provides a complete break from the road to recharge our batteries before the final driving legs. We can choose to take a short trip into the nearby medieval city to explore its historic sandstone architecture and grand central plaza. Alternatively, we might prefer to simply stay on the grounds, lounging by the pool, enjoying the wine, and making full use of the hotel spa facilities.

Portugal & Spain – day 11 & 12
Day 1
DAY 11
THE LIMESTONE GORGE
16th May
~175 miles

Our final driving day in Spain offers another choice between a beautifully relaxed transit across the high agricultural plateau, or an engaging mountain adventure. The route takes us through rolling vineyards before turning north to navigate a twisting road sandwiched between towering limestone canyon walls.
We reunite for the evening at our final hotel for our final Spanish evening meal, conveniently situated just a couple of hours drive from the port for our sailing tomorrow.

Day 1
DAY 12
THE FERRY HOME
17th May
~140 miles

Our adventure concludes with a straightforward and scenic drive north toward the rugged northern coast. The carefully planned route cuts through the final green mountains of the coastal region, offering beautiful last views of the Spanish countryside.
