From Alpine Passes to the Adriatic Coast: Discover the Northern Balkans

Join us for a spectacular 12-day driving tour exploring the Northern Balkans. This journey takes you across Europe, making the most of the German Autobahns with exciting stops at the Audi museum in Ingoldstadt and the private Porsche museum in Gmünd, Austria.

You will experience breathtaking alpine driving, including the Katschberg Pass and a dawn run up the famous Grossglockner pass to view the Franz Josef Glacier. The trip perfectly balances driving with relaxation, featuring a three-night stay in Slovenia’s Triglavski National Park and a multi-night coastal retreat in the well-preserved Venetian Gothic town of Piran on the Adriatic Sea. During your rest days, you will have the freedom to explore Lake Bled , visit the Postojna Caves , or take scenic drives across the border into Croatia.

Balkans – pre tour & day 1
Day 1
PRE-TOUR
THE MEETING POINT
~300 miles, 5-6 hours driving time

We’ll arrange your channel tunnel crossing at a time that suits you and your journey in the UK. You can either take an early crossing on the first day of the tour, or for a more relaxed start to your holiday you can take the crossing the day/evening before and spend the evening with us in our hotel just 10 minutes drive from the terminal in Calais.

Day 1
DAY 1
FIRST JOURNEY
~235 miles of driving
~300 miles, 5-6 hours driving time

After our tour briefing and issuing the sat-navs and radios we’ll be heading straight for Germany, travelling through Belgium to the Rhineland. We’ll be making the most of the efficient European motorway systems including the German Autobahns to get us to our first hotel in the Hesse region. There will be a group meal organised – a great chance to get to know your fellow travellers.

Balkans – day 2 & 3
Day 1
DAY 2
GERMAN BLAST
~300 miles, 5-6 hours driving time
~210 miles of driving

Heading through Bavaria today, we’ll be mostly sticking to the German Autobahns so that we make great progress. This may seem like a motorway slog but there are some very scenic stretches of autobahn along here as we cross the breadth of Germany. We’ll visit the Audi museum and factory in Ingoldstadt before reaching our hotel for the night near the German/Austrian border.

Day 1
DAY 3
PORSCHE & SLOVENIA
~190 miles of driving
~300 miles, 5-6 hours driving time

We’ll be taking a wide range of roads south today, visiting the fantastic private Porsche museum in Gmünd (where the first 356s were built) and driving the Katschberg Pass where the first Porsches were put through their paces. Our afternoon journey will take us further south, over the border into Slovenia via another mountain pass to the Triglavski National Park, our rest place for three nights.

Balkans – day 4 – 6
Day 1
DAY 4/5
REST DAYS
~125 miles of driving
~260 miles, 3-4 hours driving time

The next two days are yours to enjoy how you wish. We’ll run some driving tours around the Triglav mountains, and it will be possible to visit Lake Bled, the crown jewel of Slovenia. If cities and shopping are your thing then we may recommend a trip to Slovenia’s capital – Ljubljana.

Day 1
DAY 6
SLOVENIAN CRUISE
~40 miles, 4-5 hours driving time
~300 miles, 5-6 hours driving time

Today we’ll be heading for the coast, and our wonderful spa and beach hotel near Piran. A picturesque medieval coastal town renowned for its well-preserved Venetian Gothic architecture, narrow winding streets, and stunning views of the Adriatic Sea, Piran is a ral jewel of the Balkans. We’ll be using a variety of different roads enroute with possible lunch and excursion stops at the Postojna Caves or Predjama Castle.

Balkans – day 7 – 9
Day 1
DAY 7/8
REST DAYS IN PIRAN
~140 miles of driving
~260 miles, 3-4 hours driving time

We have another couple of days of not packing our suitcases and a chance to enjoy the Adriatic coast. We’ll be running scenic drives into Croatia from here, but there is also Piran to visit and our hotel is perfectly placed near the beach for some real rest and relaxation.

Day 1
DAY 9
WINE & MOUNTAINS
~140 miles of driving
~300 miles, 5-6 hours driving time

We’ll be heading north today, back to Austria. Enroute we’ll be driving through Slovenia’s wine region before heading around the Julian Alps and over the alpine crossing into Austria. We’ll be staying not far from the foot of the Grossglockner Alpine Road, ready for the next day.

Balkans – day 10 & 11
Day 1
DAY 10
GROSSGLOCKNER
~230 miles of driving
~260 miles, 3-4 hours driving time

Today we’ll be taking on a dawn raid of the Grossglockner pass before it gets too busy. We’ve picked a mid-week day for this assault, which will mean less chance of getting caught up by the weekend traffic. This is a fantastic road with many viewpoints along the way, not least the Franz Josef Glacier. We’ll finish the day in Bavaria.

Day 1
DAY 11
LUXEMBOURG
~370 miles of driving
~300 miles, 5-6 hours driving time

An autobahn today, getting us back within spitting distance of the channel for day 12. Our route will take us through Bavaria and the Rhineland before taking locals roads to our hotel in Northern Luxembourg.
This is the final night of our tour and there will be a farewell meal arranged – a chance to share our favourite moments of the trip and say our goodbyes.
