Frequently Asked Questions
-
Is this a race?Absolutely not - our road trips are designed for you to enjoy the spectacular roads and scenery, and see and do amazing things on the way. Racing and time trialling along unfamilliar roads is dangerous, and for the enjoyment of all members of the the group, we do not tolerate such activities on our road trips.
-
Will this trip be relaxing? We aim for driving days of 4-5 hours. First and last days are often more miles, in order to get you from the English Channel to our first stop. But most days are designed to get you to the destination in good time to relax and enjoy the local area and hotel amenities, while allowing for plenty of stops along the way! Some of the mountain passes can be challenging to drive, but if you take your time and take regular breaks to enjoy the amazing scenery, these are achievable for everyone.
-
Do we have to travel as a convoy? This is up to you! You can either drive as a group of 2 or more vehicles, or you can travel at your own pace. It's up to you! We'll be along the route every day, travelling at a pace that suits the majority, and you are welcome to stay with us or to travel at your own pace.
-
How will you film our road trip?We will have a range of action cameras with us, which we can fit to vehicles in the group. Your vehicle won't always have a camera fitted - we will rotate them throughout the trip between the vehicles in the group, but just because you don't have a camera doesn't mean your vehicle won't appear in shot! We also have a drone, but whether we use this will depend upon the weather conditions, tour timings and local restrictions. We will also be using handheld cameras, taking photos and videos of arrivals and stops along the way! When we get home, we will create a several minute action video based on the videos we take, and we will also facilitate an online storage facility for the group to share photos and videos of the trip.
-
Why are you called 'Making Tracks'?It has been mentioned that our name implies that we run off-road trips - i.e. tyre tracks. Although we are currently focusing on Road Trips, in the future - who knows!

I don't own a supercar or sports car. Can I still take part?Yes! We love seeing all sorts of vehicles, and it really doesn't matter what you drive. As long as your vehicle is roadworthy and reliable, you're most welcome!
-
Are your trips suitable for solo drivers? Our trips are perfectly suitable for solo drivers - in fact in most cars on our tours only one person drives! Our trips are organised so that driving times are manageable, allowing us to get to our destination by late afternoon!
-
Can I bring a vehicle not owned by me?You can use someone else's vehicle on our trips, providing you have the V5 document with you and you have written permission from the owner that you can drive it. Obviously you need to be insured, too!
-
Are Electric Vehicles (EVs) welcome?Yes! We absolutely encourage EVs on our trip, with the caveat that your EV needs suitable range between charges. You vehicle needs to be able to comfortably run for at least 300 miles on a single charge. Electric Charging Points are becoming more and more common in the UK and Europe, and many EV owners enjoy long road trips in their vehicles. On our trips the longest driving days are usually the first and the last - so we may need to allow more time to charge your vehicle enroute - or book you extra accommodation and extend the trip for you so that the journey can be split. We may also have to provide you with a different hotel in the case that one of our hotels doesn't have charging facilities. Please do contact us prior to booking so that we can assess your requirements in more detail.
-
What vehicles can I take on your road trips?Any vehicle that is roadworthy, insured and well maintained is welcome on our road trips - whether it has 2, 3, 4 or more wheels!! Road trips are so much fun, no matter what vehicle you have!
-
What paperwork will I need for a European road trip? You won't need much in the way of paperwork for most of our trips, and if you need anything specific, it will be made clear on the booking forms. Most of the time you will only need your passport (valid for six months after return and with spare pages for stamps), EHIC Card for emergency health in Europe, Travel insurance, Vehicle V5 document, Vehicle Insurance Document and Breakdown Insurance Document. From May 2023 you will be required to apply for the EU's new Visa Waiver scheme, ETIAS. This will involve filling an online form prior to departure and paying the fee by debit or credit card (fee to be confirmed). We will provide you with full information on what you will need well in advance of your booked trip, but do get in touch if you have any specific queries or concerns.

I don't want to use the Eurotunnel, can you book me onto a different ferry route?Yes! We can. Although the most popular channels crossings are those from Kent, We believe that the channel crossings are NOT a 'one size fits all' situation. While the Eurotunnel is the quickest option, it's far from convenient for those who are not based in the South East. Plus, savings in time can soon be negated by long waits at these very busy ports and along the connecting roads - where the media have covered long delays at customs and check in, and many missed bookings. For those travelling from the Midlands, East Anglia, Wales or further North, we highly recommend the overnight crossing from Harwich to Hook Of Holland, provided by Stena Line. Although it's a longer crossing, the journey to the port is much less stressful and the overnight sailing is a thoroughly relaxing way to start your holiday. For those even further north, the crossing from Newcastle Upon Tyne to Amsterdam is another excellent option. Get in touch with us can advise and assist you in booking a suitable channel crossing that will properly work for you - and any additional costs involved.

Do I need insurance?Travel Insurance is a requirement on this trip. For the enjoyment of everyone on the trip, we need to know that you are suitably covered against illness and health emergencies. You will also need vehicle insurance that covers you in the countries that we will be driving in, along with European Breakdown cover. We are here if you need any advice sorting any of the paperwork and insurances needed for your trip!
