Scaling the Pyrenees: High Passes & Spectacular Vistas
This carefully planned tour takes you south through the beautiful Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Bordeaux regions of France , arriving for a two-night stay in the Michelin-starred Spanish coastal town of San Sebastián – the perfect place for some time out.
From there, you’ll tackle some of the highest and most dramatic passes in the Pyrenees , drive the renowned N260 road , and conquer the Col Du Tormalet. With a two-night stopover in Andorra and a thrilling concluding visit to the iconic Le Mans 24hr circuit , this trip promises a spectacular mix of scenery, culture, and unforgettable driving. (Note: A ferry option to Bilbao is also available for those who prefer to skip the drive down through France.)

PRE-TOUR
THE MEETING POINT

We’ll arrange your channel tunnel crossing at a time that suits you and your journey in the UK. You can either take an early crossing on the first day of the tour, or for a more relaxed start to your holiday you can take the crossing the day/evening before and spend the evening with us in our hotel just 10 minutes drive from the terminal in Calais.

FIRST JOURNEY

After our tour briefing and issuing the sat-navs and radios our first day on the road will largely be about munching kilometres. We’ll be using the efficient French motorway systems to get us to our first hotel within the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of France. There will be a group meal at our hotel – a good chance to get to know your fellow travellers.

SOUTHWARDS PUSH

Today we’ll be cracking the rest of the journey down to Spain, heading through the Bordeaux wine region and Nouvelle-Aquitaine. At the end of the day we will be relaxing and enjoying a hearty Spanish dinner in the opulent coastal town of Donostia / San Sebastián. Known for its beautiful beaches and the most Michelin stars per capita, this is our home for the next couple of nights, giving us some R&R after the trek through France.

DONOSTIA / SAN SEBASTIÁN

Today is yours to choose what you would like to do. Whether that’s heading into the city, enjoying the beach or relaxing in our wonderful hotel. If you’re still after driving, the Northern Spain coastal route is well worth doing and we can provide you with details.

WESTERN PYRENEES

Today we’re heading out into the Pyrenees, and we have a cracking day planned. Although this is not the highest area of the Pyrenees, the roads are quite and the vistas are astonishing. Expect multiple hill and mountain passes, fantastic scenery and a wide variety of roads to enjoy. We’ll be finishing the day in the Canfranc region, set on the border with France and Spain.

HIGH PASSES

We’ll be tackling some of the highest passes in the Pyrenees as we zigzag the border with France today. Expect silky roads, huge vistas, lakes and reservoirs some of the most dramatic scenery you have ever driven through. Our hotel tonight is across the French border, well placed for the highest pass in the French Pyrenees in the morning.

MOUNTAINS AND LAKES

A wonderfully diverse day today. We’ll be heading over the Col Du Tormalet, the highest pass in the French Pyrenees. From here it’s onto another pass before having time to explore and have lunch in the beautiful town of Arreau.
After lunch we’ll visit Cap Du Long, the largest reservoir in the Pyrenees with a dam over 100m high! We’ll be heading south from here, staying near to the town of Ainsa.

THE N260

After a morning exploring the fortress town of Ainsa we’re doing an absolute classic in terms of Spanish road trips. Renowned to motorcyclists and cars alike, this road is fantastic and brings us to our next destination and the location of our 2 night stop in Andorra.

ANDORRA

Today is another day where you won’t need to pack the suitcases. You can either visit the capital for some shopping, rest and relax, or join us on a circular tour of some of the best mountain roads in Andorra, enjoying lunch at a height of 2,200 metres above sea level!

MOUNTAINS TO VINEYARDS

We’ll be heading back into France today, making our way North. We’ll enjoy a mix of main and ‘D’ roads on our way to our stop in the Bordeaux wine region for the night.

HEADING NORTH

Using the French Autoroutes we’ll be making good progress on our way back the channel today. We’ll be visiting the Le Mans 24hr Museum and you’ll get a chance to drive around the sections of the track that are on the public highway. If the car museum isn’t your thing then why not pop into the Old Town of Le Mans, which is fantastic.
This is the final night of our tour and there will be a farewell meal arranged – a chance to share our favourite moments of the trip and say our goodbyes.

TO CALAIS

This morning we’ll make our way back to Calais for our channel crossings in the afternoon.
If you have a long journey ahead of you in the UK, we recommend that you organise an extra night’s stay either near Calais or Folkestone. We can advise on hotels, and book for you if you wish.
If the drive through France feels like a lot of driving and you would prefer to take the ferry to Bilbao then you could do that and meet us in San Sebastian. You could depart with the group after or Andorra stay and return to Bilbao from there. We would refund your Eurotunnel passage cost but you would be responsible for booking your own ferry.
